The cat's out of the bag about TJ"s famous "Brooklyn" babka, which ranks among the best in New York most babka taste tests. Thanks to the super journalist Andrew Silverstein, we can finally take a deep dive into the history of the babka and the Schick's Bakery saga that brought us to Trader Joe's Brooklyn Babka today. Whether you grew up eating babka or discovered it through Seinfeld, this quasi-bread cake remains one of the best-known and much-loved Jewish pastries, besides rugalach and black-and-whites.
Here is Silverstein's article in The Forward. Thank you, Professor Allen Schick for sharing your story, and thank you, Renée Schick, who founded Schick's Bakery in Brooklyn and created the original babka that inspired Brooklyn Brand's babka which packages TJ's Brooklyn babka today in the Bronx.
Happy Hanukah 5785/2024!
